Black Country Camping

Camping in and around the Black Country

The Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton) is better known for canals, foundries and the Living Museum than for campsites. Yet some of the best camping in the Midlands is within half an hour of it: sandstone ridges at Kinver, open hilltops at Clent, the ancient woodland of Wyre Forest and the heaths of Cannock Chase.

This guide lists 15 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks we've checked, grouped by area, with what each one takes and what's nearby. We're independent and don't take bookings. Every listing links straight to the campsite's own website.

Planning a trip

Getting there. Most of the sites here are 15 to 45 minutes by car from Dudley or Wolverhampton. The M5, M6 and A449 do most of the work. A few are reachable by train and bus: the Severn Valley Railway stops at Bewdley and Bridgnorth, and Cannock and Rugeley have stations on the edge of the Chase.

When to book. Small farm sites and anything near Cannock Chase or Kinver Edge fill up early for summer weekends and bank holidays. Many simple sites open only from Easter to October, so check before you set off in winter.

What to pack. Our camping kit checklist covers the tent, sleeping, cooking and small-but-vital items people forget.
